SPEAKER: Dr. L. Bertello

ABSTRACT: The term "space weather" refers to the variable conditions on the Sun and interplanetary space that can influence the performance of technologies we use on Earth. Sudden bursts of plasma and magnetic field structures from the Sun's atmosphere (coronal mass ejections) together with sudden bursts of radiation (solar flares) are the major contributors to space weather. In this talk I will discuss some of the aspects of solar variability relevant to space weather, and what we know about the conditions surrounding other stars.
