Course details

Introduction to science and technology at the nanoscale. Techniques for ultra high vacuum and surface structure of solid surfaces. Scanning probe microscopy: in particular Scanning Tunnel Microscopy (STM) in Vacuum and in liquid (EC_STM ) and atomic force microscopy. In particular we have identified the theoretical principles, the experimental apparatus and the analysis of data and possible information deducible from different acquisition techniques. Electron microscopy: in particular transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM). The ion spectroscopic techniques such as Focused Ion Beam(FIB). Optical techniques sensitive to the surface (epioptics) such as Reflectance Anisotropic Spectroscopy (RAS) and Raman spectroscopy. Finally a look at the modern techniques of lithography at the nanoscale, such as nanolithography and self assembled techniques for the nanostructuring.

Objectives

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
This course aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of the most suitable experimental techniques for studying the properties of new materials on a nanometric scale with special reference to modern microscopy techniques.
The course includes: theoretical lessons and practical lessons in different laboratories to deepen the knowledge of the most important experimental instrumentation for the structural and electronic characterization of materials.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
Students must gain in-depth knowledge of the main matter properties on the nanometer scale and of the main investigation techniques sensitive to this scale. The verification of the students' learning outcomes is carried out through an oral exam and the production of written reports describing the experimental activity carried out at the research laboratories collaborating in the course.
