Introduction to organic molecules and functional groups. Nomenclature. Rules to write molecules. Mass Spectrometry. Intermolecular interactions. Relationship between structure and physical properties. UV-vis and IR spectroscopies. Solvents and solubility. Introduction to 1H and 13C NMR spectra. Resonance and aromaticity. Electronic substituent effects (inductive and conjugative). Organic acids and bases (Brønsted and Lewis). Conformations and configurations (geometrical and optical stereoisomers). Introduction to chemical kinetics and reaction mechanisms. Reactions of main classes of organic compounds. Alkanes and cycloalkanes, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, amines, alkenes, alkynes, dienes, aromatic compounds, aldehydes and ketones and their nitrogen derivatives, carboxylic acids and acylic derivatives (esters, amides, anhydrides, acyl halides, nitriles).
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Knowledge of nomenclature, of ways to represent molecules, of tridimensional structure (chirality included), of physical and chemical properties of organic molecules. Understanding the rationale of organic reactions in terms of reaction mechanism. Knowledge of main techniques to purify and identify organic molecules.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Recognition of the principal reactions of the organic compounds analyzed during the course, explanation of the reactivity in terms of molecular structure and description of the single steps of reaction mechanisms.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Prediction of he products of a single reaction and plan of the synthesis of simple organic compounds.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS: to critically evaluate experimental data and solve simple problems.
