Research topic: LIDAR techniques in fusion diagnostics and remote sensing
Description: The scope of this fellowship encompasses the design of Thomson Scattering LIDAR and remote sensing diagnostics currently under development by the Nuclear Department (NUC) DTT-OPD Laboratory, within the broader framework of laser-based diagnostics for fusion research. In this context, Thomson Scattering LIDAR is considered as a key approach to remotely retrieve plasma parameters, with emphasis on ensuring consistency between diagnostic requirements and the resulting instrument concept. The project focuses on the engineering and implementation of remote sensing instrumentation aimed at characterizing plasma temperature and density, leveraging the laboratory’s experience and ongoing activities in this field. The work is carried out in partnership with the University of Tor Vergata and the Consorzio RFX in Padua, fostering scientific and technical exchange among complementary competences. Furthermore, potential advancements and future applications within the remote sensing domain will be evaluated, in relation to the maturation of LIDAR techniques and their prospective use in upcoming diagnostic scenarios.
