TITLE: Solar spectropolarimetry: a personal view

SPEAKER: Dr. J.C. del Toro Iniesta (IAA-CSIC)

ABSTRACT: Spectropolarimetry is the most comprehensive way of measuring the properties of electromagnetic radiation. As such, it offers the astronomer the widest diagnostics capabilities. Through physical mechanisms like absorption, emission, scattering, Zeeman effect, Doppler effect, Hanle effect, and others, matter leaves its fingerprints on the light emitted by the Sun. Therefore, measuring (-metry) the polarization state (-polari-) of the spectrum (spectro-) of light, one can infer the physical properties of solar material. In this talk I’ll give a personally-biased view of spectropolarimetry by showing some examples of instruments developed or being developed by the Spanish Space Solar Physics Consortium (S3PC) led by the Solar Physics Group (SPG) of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC).
