My activity is focused on four main research lines:
- Growth, structural and optical characterization of semiconductor heterostructures (quantum wells and quantum dots) on silicon substrates
The main achievement of this line has been the first observation of electroluminescence in the THz range from intersubband transitions in the conduction band of Ge/SiGe quantum cascade structures.
- Graphene and 2D materials synthesis on non-metal substrates
The main achievement of this research line has been the growth of germanene on a HOPG substrate and the correlation of the electronic and structural properties of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition on a Ge wafer to the surface termination of the Ge surface.
- Magnetic properties of single atom and molecules on surface through X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy
The main achievement of this research line has been the first demonstration of long magnetic lifetime and hysteresis in single atoms on non-metal surfaces.
- Investigation of molecules and chemical reactions on surface with sub-molecular resolution through scanning tunneling microscopy with CO-functionalized tips; atomic force microscopy of biological sample also in liquid environment
The main achievement of this research line has been the first demonstration of on-surface molecular recognition and non-covalent dimerization driven by chalcogen bonding interactions.
