TITLE: The Demographics of Exoplanetary Systems: State-of-the-art and Future Prospects
SPEAKER: Dr. Alessandro Sozzetti (INAF-Osservatorio Astrofisico di Torino)
ABSTRACT: The study of the statistical properties of the population of presently known exoplanets (i.e., their demographics) allows us to address broad open questions in the field, related to, e.g., the mechanisms and timescales for planet formation and migration, their dependence on the properties of the central stars, and the evolution and diversity in exoplanetary systems. I will present a general overview of the demographics of exoplanetary systems across orders of magnitude in mass and orbital separation, based on the collection of data of the highest quality gathered from the ground and in space in the quarter century after the discovery of the first planetary mass companion to a solar-type star. I will especially highlight the contribution to the field made by the high-resolution spectrograph HARPS-N, that will soon reach ten years of successful operations at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. I will then discuss future prospects for further improvements in our understanding of exoplanet demographics, with a particular focus on the impact of the next generation of spectrographs for extreme-precision radial-velocity measurements, such as ESPRESSO, and on the soon-to-come, highly anticipated new revolution in the field provided by the Gaia global astrometry mission.
