Mattia Gaboardi

Tenure Track

Since September 2024, I have been an Assistant Professor in Applied Physics at the Department of Physics of the University of Rome Tor Vergata. I am also affiliated with the NAST Centre and the INFN Tor Vergata, where I contribute to the commissioning of compact betatron radiation sources.

My research focuses on understanding the structure, disorder, and atomic and molecular dynamics of sustainable materials for energy applications and environmental protection, using a broad suite of experimental techniques, including spectroscopy (neutron, photon, and magnetic spectroscopies), crystallography (synchrotron, X-ray, and neutron diffraction), and thermochemical methods (DSC, flash calorimetry, and TGA).

Before joining Tor Vergata, I've been Senior Scientist for almost 2 years in the Quantum Beams & Computation for Sustainable Materials Group at the Materials Physics Centre (San Sebastian, Spain). Previously, I worked for 4 years as a Beamline Scientist at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste (Italy) and 2 years as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (STFC, UK). I obtained my M.Sc. Diploma in Materials Science and the Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Parma (Italy), where I also carried out postdoctoral research for 2 more years.

I hold the Italian national scientific qualifications (ASN) for Associate Professor in Applied Physics, Experimental Physics of Matter, Physical Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry.
